Choosing the right size aquarium tank
Three simple rules before you even think about what you want.
- Establish your budget $500 or $5,000
- Establish the space available including floor strength
- Buy the largest sized aquarium you can afford
My own rule of thumb for any aquarium is 70 gallons. In various literature I’ve read over years that seems to be the starting point give or take 10 gallons. From experience larger tanks have yielded better over all results.
Bigger (more water volume) is always better.
A few things you need to understand.
Aquariums are work. Water is heavy.
If you don’t maintain your aquarium properly it will look like hell.
The reason I recommend the “larger the better” is that a greater volume of water reduces the rate and degree of of fluctuation of water chemistry and temperature.
Bear in mind that fish live in environments with millions of gallons of water that is fairly stable and what variations exist are natural and related to seasonal weather patterns that tend to be consistent over time.
Fish do not usually adapt well to rapid fluctuations of any kind unless they lived in an environment where such fluctuations were normal.
Some fish therefore are less susceptible than others.
Saltwater fish are particularly sensitive to rapid changes - given that they live in huge bodies of water (the ocean) that do not fluctuate in chemistry or temperature except extremely gradually.
So as you can see my emphasis is on size and my recommendation is the larger the better within your budgetary and space constraints.
Once you have chosen the size of the tank – the next step will be to choose the tank inhabitants and decor.
I will discuss that in another article.

350+ million reasons why politicians are bad for our environment: perspective
99% of over 350+ million Americans are in some state of either anger, fear, disbelief, bewilderment, hate, prejudice, greed, selfishness and holiness.
One political party is predominantly to thank for much of this. Yet all are responsible in the end.
Everything that is wrong in America can be traced directly to politics aka 100% minus 99% = %1. Income inequality.
Let’s start with the biggest lies the media puts forth 7/24/365
Poor Americans and poor neighborhoods and ghettos, crime etc – some politicians bundle these disadvantaged Americans under the political labels of lazy, welfare cheats, criminals, ignorant and lately include unemployed Americans, atheists, Muslims and single mothers.
The labels of liberal or progressive are skinned to be something other than what they are – as well as the term conservatives.
Politics has hijacked these words from the vernacular ….. and used them to segregate us Americans into warring factions.
We are ALL Americans and more alike than unalike – since we are all both progressive and conservative at given times with different opinions but with one goal.
We all want to make America a better United nation for ALL Americans and a much better citizen of the family of nations on earth.
We cannot do that with politicians building walls around groups of Americans and encouraging us to attack one another.
Many in the 1% support the 100% and too many in the 100% support the the Corporate plutocracy that Governs us, feeds us and clothes us and shelters us. WE are financial slaves of the Corpocracy.
While some say they despise welfare – we have ALL become the financial dependents of a totally undemocratic Corpocracy that has been slowly taking over our representative Government for the past century.
Now more and more we hear from the right – that we are not a democracy – but some form of a plutocratic republic governed by the minority.
is it too late to reverse this lie and the process of un-democratization? Perhaps.
A very large segment of Americans are comatose … and a good example is that many would need a dictionary to understand what comatose means …
The neglect of the education of the public at large has fostered a over abundance of unskilled workers in America for which their are not enough jobs.
This becomes acutely apparent during hard economic times when lower echelon service jobs are hardest hit. Those higher up on the business ladder are insulated from the economic fallout that they create.
Better educated Americans anticipate economic downturns, hedge their investments and too often make bets based on privileged information as was the case with members of congress. They also fire workers at will to maintain their income status.
The education problem in America has become generational and has slowly crept into the lower middle class and is now eating away at the middle-middle class.
The tendency is that those with the most money get the most education. Also those who feel no pain have no empathy for those that do – even if they are in the same income class.
Intelligence takes many forms – and manual acumen can be as important and even more important than cerebral acumen. When push cones to shove – you need a farmer to live not a cosmetic surgeon or dentist.
Most of us are handicapped when it comes to electric, plumbing and HAVC issues. Landscaping and roofing and farming require skills and labor not lectures and forums.
Agro-technological skills and skills related to the restoration of nature and repairing the environment are becoming increasingly important – not just as an opportunity but as a necessity. Our planet will not survive much longer without a radical change in human priorities.
Access to knowledge is no longer restricted to classrooms that are limited in scope and capability by geography. Knowledge can be decimated using broadband Internet in many new ways that are more efficient.
Children can theoretically learn a lot more a lot faster.
What classrooms provide is the necessary human interface that is increasingly lacking.
However real time video is changing that as well, and it is conceivable that a real-time classroom of only ten children can be constructed over the Internet. teachers can be brought in based on subject matter expertise -and private tutoring can be facilitated as well.
These are not pie in the sky grandiose ideas – it is happening now -but only for the privileged few who have access and can afford to pay a premium.
Poor children living in impoverished areas are literally being pre-murdered. By that I mean they are being stamped and rejected from society without even a chance to succeed.
In contrast most Americans take it for granted that their child is getting a decent education and the equal opportunity that comes with equal knowledge – and even that is no longer the case.
Good schools are generally located in expensive neighborhoods ….. this is the product of gated communities and income inequality as well as education-inequality.
